How to Get the Most Out of Your Microscope

Take your inspections to the next level! From taking care of your microscope to modifying it in ways you never thought of, we listed all the ways you can get the most out of your microscope.

Proper Cleaning
Let's start off with one of the most important ways to keep your microscope functioning correctly, CLEANING! If you are new to the microscope world or have been using microscopes your whole life, you know how intimidating or time consuming it can be. Not to worry, we put together instructions on how to clean your microscope and also the best tools to use to make it quick and easy. When you are done cleaning or using your microscope. we recommend you put on a microscope dust cover to protect your microscope from collecting dust, debris, light scratches, and moisture.

Correct Lighting
There are four different types of lighting on most microscopes, let's find one that fits you best. One of the light types is tungsten, which is the most inexpensive type. Tungsten does have some disadvantages since it produces a yellow type of light, it can affect the color accuracy of the specimen being viewed. It can also dry out the specimen with the amount of heat the light gives off. Fluorescent lighting produces a white type of light and produces less heat, which makes it highly recommended for students and hobbyists. LED lighting is very popular since it consumes very little power, lasts twice as long, and sometimes comes cordless! The last type of light is halogen lighting which is mainly used in medical and lab microscopes since they provide a very focused, white light.

Magnification
Magnification is extremely important in a microscope since it is essentially how you are able to inspect the object. A light microscope has two sources of magnification. The primary source is the objective lens and the secondary source is the eyepiece lens. Total magnification is achieved when you multiply the magnification power of the objective lens by the eyepiece lens. If you need more magnification, opt for higher magnification eyepieces which you can browse here. For those who wear eyeglasses, it is best to use eyepieces with high eye point to make viewing your specimen easier.

Camera Attachment
To really impress your friends, family, and colleagues, consider a camera attachment for your microscope to share what you are inspecting. The camera can capture images or video and also attaches to a monitor for shared viewing. This is perfect for teachers to show students or for hobbyists who love to show off their discoveries. Boli Optics offers a wide variety of cameras and display attachments for your microscope.

Objectives
Microscope objectives can also be swapped out for different viewings of different objects. For instance, if you are inspecting metals or ceramics, you can change your regular objectives to metallurgical ones for superior viewing. Polarizing objectives can also be in substitute to make the light waves vibrate in one direction. To view all of Boli Optics microscope objectives, click here.
